Welcome
to the JKSL Blog

With the whirlwind of tumultuous news and events happening continuously as of late, it comes as no surprise that the coronavirus pandemic has finally reached the wedding industry. Unfortunately, that means that one of life’s biggest moments has been temporarily cancelled for many concerned couples. If you or your venue are facing an upcoming cancellation, we have a few thoughts and recommendations. We are here to help you better understand why the coronavirus is canceling weddings and receptions all across the United States.

How Weddings are Being Affected

From weddings to funerals, the coronavirus is canceling life’s biggest moments and leaving families heartbroken because of it. The wedding industry and professional DJ services are starting to feel the potential ripple effects and are trying hard to adapt in these uncertain times. No matter the event, cancellations are occurring more frequently all across the board in order to increase the essential practice of social distancing. Recently, a school superintendent said something very profound in his address canceling school for the next three weeks to help stop the spread of COVID-19:

“In the end, it will be impossible to know if we overreacted or did too much, but it will be quite apparent if we under reacted or did too little.” – Darrin Peppard

Those words still ring true as to why we are seeing an uptick in wedding cancellations locally and nationally. For most couples, the reward is not worth the risk. Health and safety of family and friends must come first. Social gatherings and the wedding season have been put on hold. Therefore, the difficult decision to abruptly postpone your upcoming wedding in 2020 may be inevitable.

New Clients: No Deposit Due for 90 Days

To give our new clients peace of mind during this crisis we’ve eliminated our immediate $250 deposit for contracts signed after 5-13-20 for 2020 events. We will hold your date for 90 days without a deposit as events unfold. This gives us a chance to DJ your wedding if things get better, and guarantees you won’t lose hundreds of dollars if the situation stays the same or worsens. The deposit will be due 90 days from the date of account registration (unless your event date is less than 90 days away). However if you change your mind before that, no problem. We will free the date on our calendars with no obligation from you.

Our Cancellation Policy for Current Packages

All of our bookings in Northwest Ohio for April, May, June, and most of July have rescheduled already, a few have unfortunately canceled altogether. Therefore, we are taking a pretty hard hit. We truly care about our clients and want to be a part of their big day in the near future. All deposits will still be good for all rescheduled dates, in other words you do not have to put down a new deposit for your rescheduled date. At Jason Kent Sound and Lighting, our policy for rescheduling a wedding package is pretty simple and straight forward. Our three options are as follows:

1. Reschedule with your same assigned DJ. We will do everything we can to accommodate your date and keep you with the same DJ you initially booked.

2. If your assigned DJ is unavailable, another professional DJ from within our service would be booked by us for your wedding reception.

3. If we’re completely booked, we will help you by reaching out to another company we know would be a good match for your perfect day.

4. If you’re unsure of rescheduling but would like to have more time to think about a new date, we will keep you in our system as active.

Our policy for cancellations is that we will keep you in our system as “deposit paid” but with an open date. We will not charge you a cancellation fee. If at a later date you decide to move forward with another date, your deposit and quote will still be good for that date. We highly recommend booking a date in 2021, however recent models showing the virus’s spread could take us into 2022. Most good vendors and venues are booked solid until the end of this year.

Unfortunately, we cannot refund deposits for a cancellations at this time. The deposit is our safety net and is the only way we keep an income coming in during times like these. With the amount of cancellations and postponements coming in, this is all we have. However we will keep it on file that you did pay the deposit, and honor that deposit if you decide to reschedule with us in the future. And, we hope that you do!
For couples who have made payments outside of the deposit, we will still apply those payments to your rescheduled date. If by chance you do need a full refund outside of your deposit due to canceling the contract completely, we will make every effort to refund that amount as soon as we can.
We are a small business and we remain liquid. We do guarantee that we will remain in business, being that all equipment is paid off and our website is maintained in-house, which makes our cost of doing business lower than most other DJ services in the area.

The show must go on. If you have an upcoming wedding already scheduled for 2020, there are a probably a multitude of questions running through your mind right now. With the novel coronavirus making headlines by the minute, it is perfectly natural to be concerned about how this may impact your big day. With so many logistics in play, it is important to be informed about the numerous options available to keep your reception running safely. For everything you should know about coronavirus safety tips for weddings and receptions, please continue reading.

Guest List Modifications

With the current outbreak of COVID-19, it is important to be informed about how this may affect your wedding day. Typically, people travel from all across the United States to attend weddings of friends and loved ones. Sometimes, they even travel from across the border or overseas. With travel restrictions being an issue, both internationally and domestically, understand that this may decrease your guest list exponentially. Remember, less is more.

Instead, consider limiting attendees to local friends and immediate family members. Having a smaller ceremony will allow plenty of safe space for you and your guests. If someone is not feeling well, have them stay at home! Additionally, the elderly are the most at risk of getting sick and should not be in attendance. Hopefully they will be compassionate about your decision and understand it is in their best interest.

Keep Your Distance

Social distancing at your wedding and reception is very important! Be sure to keep a minimum of six feet between guests at all times. No hand shaking! Instead, bump elbows or avoid physical contact altogether. Cover your mouth when you cough, and sneeze into your elbow. If you have a food buffet, have a server wear disposable gloves to dish up the plates so that your guests are not individually touching the serving spoons. Also, consider having plates of food delivered to the tables instead of a buffet to limit the spread of germs.

A great alternative for those from afar to still be able to watch your wedding is live streaming. Having an avenue for others at home to witness your nuptials take place as they happen from the comfort of their living room is the perfect fix. You can also add your professional wedding photos to an online gallery for your guests to view. Or better yet, upload videos to YouTube of your big day so your loved ones can view them over and over again. These things will help limit exposure and contact amongst your guests as much as possible!

Protect Your Guests

Having a sufficient supply of cleaning products on-hand at your wedding is a must. Although they are in short supply now, get what you can to ensure that the tables, chairs, and surfaces of your event are as clean as possible. Not all cleaners are the same, so make sure that you use EPA approved disinfectants. Keeping frequently touched surfaces cleaned properly, especially at your reception, will help protect your guests from the virus.

Place hand sanitizing stations at each and every door to ensure that everyone entering your ceremony has clean hands to begin with. Additionally, setting a bottle of hand sanitizer in the middle of every table is the perfect addition to your centerpiece. Thoroughly wash your hands as frequently as possible for a minimum of 20 seconds in hot, soapy water. If possible, have protective face masks available to guests that would like to wear them. Although they may not be the most popular choice, anything to help avoid the transmission of germs between your loved ones will be appreciated, and potentially life-saving!

Ohio Case Study

Currently, gatherings of 100 people or more are still allowed for churches and weddings. In Ohio, Governor Mike DeWine has placed strict rules on public events to help eliminate the spread of coronavirus and to help flatten the curve of transmission. Please do not panic if you have a wedding and reception currently on the books in the upcoming months. Instead, stay informed and implement the tools above in order to better understand these very important coronavirus safety tips for weddings and receptions. For more information, please reference the current ODH and CDC guidelines.

If you are in Northwest Ohio, we are here to help answer any questions you may have above how this may affect your wedding reception. Considering a reschedule? As most good vendors and venues are booked solid now through October, look forward to 2021 instead. If you currently have a reception scheduled with Jason Kent Sound and Lighting, please call us at 419-619-2291. We will happily guide you through the process to ensure that your special day remains as memorable as possible!

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. If that is the case, then your wedding is the perfect place to take more photos to add to your story together as a couple. Your photographer is there to professionally capture all of your most important moments. Your friends and family are there to take their own photographs of your special day. But, what about snapping the more candid group opportunities? Well, photo booths are the answer! Continue reading to find out about all the potential benefits of having a photo booth at your wedding reception.

Make It Memorable for Everyone

The best way to capture memories of your special day! Remember the old photo booths with the curtain in the mall? They printed off your series of impromptu, sometimes silly photos onto strips of film. A photo booth is the new, easy-to-use way to conveniently freeze frames at wedding receptions. Think of it as an automated selfie booth. They can have a variety of different backdrops you can choose from. Backgrounds that feature an open design allow for even larger group photos at receptions. Props can also be incorporated to make your photos more fun and exciting.

When working with a professional DJ service, the ability to add a photo booth to your package is a seamless integration. In order for this to be possibility, be sure to find a reputable and experienced disc jockey who has this new and exciting service available. Photo booths can added onto an existing DJ package, or booked as a standalone package instead. You can also choose to have a printer available to instantly print out your favorite photos, or upgrade to your very own customized print templates. The options are endless!

Candidly Capture Your Memories

Photo booths are one of the hottest trends at wedding receptions. In todays photo-centric society, pictures and video are the most popular means of communication. Having plenty of different ways to capture your big day from all angles can never be a bad thing. The more traditional, professional photography and videography you will receive from your official photographer will be the memories you will frame and hang up on your wall for all to see. Another great way to ensure that your wedding is captured from all angles is to have your guests take additional photos from their point of view.

The best way to get group photos and video clips of everyone that came to celebrate is by having a photo booth at your reception. People can gather together behind your selected backdrop and take funny or serious photos to make more memories. The ability of your guests to be able to unwind and be themselves in a situation like this is priceless. It will give you the type of photos that you would normally only be able to take from the comfort of your own phone. Save yourself the hassle and awkwardness of having to carry around your cell phone at your reception. Instead, leave all that work to your automated photo booth. Say cheese!

You’ve probably seen them without even realizing what they are called. The dramatic lighting effects at events, in particular at weddings and wedding receptions, that literally light up the entire room. A few of these lights can add a huge visual impact, turning any event into something unique and classy. So, what exactly are these popular lights called? Well, uplighting is their name, and elegance is their game. Keep on reading to find out everything you need to learn about wedding uplighting.

What is uplighting?

Uplighting gives you the ability to easily transform your reception hall into something very inviting and elegant. With their ability to add a large visual impact to any space, they are the perfect solution for bland or poorly lit wedding reception spaces. Unlike traditional fluorescent room lighting, uplights provide dramatic LED lighting in a variety of colors. They are also extremely energy-efficient, generating a very low amount of heat to ensure the safety of your room and your guests. Uplights also have the ability to flicker and strobe to the beat of the music and can change colors to create different moods when desired.

How does uplighting work?

To make the most impact, uplighting is evenly and strategically placed around the entire parameter of your reception area. Placing the lights closely up against exterior walls can make smaller rooms seem even larger than they actually are. On the other hand, placing the lights in the same manner for larger rooms can make the space feel even more intimate. Focusing the uplights on the most important areas of the reception hall that you want to draw the most attention to can help you have the most impact. For more useful tips and tricks, check out some very important wedding uplighting dos and dont’s.

Can uplighting be added?

Yes, you can easily add an uplighting package to your wedding reception! But first and foremost, you have to find a professional DJ service in or around your area that offers uplighting packages. Keep in mind that not all DJs offer this type of professional service, because not all DJs are created equally. For a clearer idea of what an experienced entertainment service can do for a room, check out this video showcasing uplighting after the exit of the bride and groom.

If you are located in the Northwest Ohio area, Jason Kent Sound and Lighting is extremely experienced with uplighting installation and presentation. Having incorporated this type of lighting at a multitude of events, we are your premier source for uplighting in the Toledo, Findlay and Lima areas. Uplights may be added to any one of our DJ packages, but are automatically included around the parameter of the room when choosing the “Light Up the Night” package.

No matter what type of event you are preparing to plan, cost is almost always the biggest deciding factor in any decision that you make. Your budget comes into play whether it’s a small birthday party you’ve been planning all year long, or a large wedding reception you’ve been planning your entire life. Having your event be the best that it can be for the fairest price possible is a good rule of thumb, but be very cautionary when it comes to the type of entertainment you hire. Spending a small amount of money on the least expensive DJ you can find could result in a day you’ll remember for all the wrong reasons.

Words of Warning About the Cheapest DJ

We totally understand that you are on a budget, and the nearest disc jokey in your town is offering seemingly affordable wedding receptions for a few hundred dollars a night. At first thought, this may sound like a great deal that’s too good to be true. And you’re completely right! The reason for this is that the cheap, budget DJ lacks the necessary professional equipment, years of experience, and talented resources to guarantee you a safe day without any problems. Cheaper is not always better, especially when it comes to entertainment.

The cheapest DJ may also have very few and very poor reviews online, or in real life for that matter. Even if they have great reviews, at that price they cannot afford the proper equipment or dedicated time for your wedding. We completely understand, because this is how we started out long ago, and it was nearly impossible. If all you want is music playing at your event, wouldn’t connecting your phone to a rented sound system be more cost effective and reliable than a DJ with the lowest price? Think about it.

If you desire to go down this route and hire the cheapest DJ, you are truly taking a huge risk on the biggest day of your entire life. Trust us, this is something you will come to regret as the event unfolds, and even more so years down the road as you reflect on your entertainment mistake. Please take this into consideration. Choose wisely, because saving a few dollars up front will most likely lead to a lot of wasted money in the end.

Words of Wisdom About the Professional DJ

Instead of the cheapest option, strongly consider paying a couple hundred dollars more to hire an experienced DJ that will ensure your big day is free of stress. It will be well worth it. Although they may cost a bit more, professional wedding DJs have all of the necessary equipment and backups in place in case something fails. They have the ability to do live mixing and put on a one-of-a-kind lighting show to get your audience dancing to your handpicked playlist. Experienced DJs can also effectively coordinate your event and serve as your emcee, the host and personality of your reception.

At Jason Kent Sound and Lighting, we know what a world of difference a professional in this industry can make because we’ve seen and experienced it first hand. Make the comparison between us and the competition, and you will see that our services and value for the professionalism we provide are second-to-none. We offer a truly original, non-intrusive approach to entertainment for unique couples and unique events. A DJ can definitely make or break your event or reception, so please do your homework by reading reviews and researching pricing thoroughly.

There may be many cheaper DJs out there, but remember, you get what you pay for!
